Netbooks are not made for heavy duty processor hugging applications, but with paying a little attention you may be able to speed them up a little so the everyday use becomes less frustrating and websites load faster.
Most mini notebooks use the Intel Atom architecture, which is an engineering masterpiece, at least when you consider power consumption and portability. They are not the main diamond on the crown of mobile computing, but they definitely get the job done, and with taking a few easy steps you can make your notebook perform better under pressure.
1. Notebooks are rarely stuffed full of memory. The chipset - the part that controls peripherals and communication between internal parts - supports 2GB in most cases and the tendency shows that there is not going to be more than that even in new models. If your netbook has only 1GB memory or even less, chances are that you can expand that with another stick. Refer to your manual to see if there is an option for you to put more RAM in without losing warranty.
2. Spyware and malware threats slow every computer down. You may be completely free of those problems, but there is no telling unless you make sure by running a remover application. There are good solutions for free, just check some online resources before give a piece of software a go. Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy usually get the work done.
3. A really common problem is when people run everything all at once. They have virus protection, all kinds of instant messaging clients, three different browsers all full of tabs and some other applications right on top of it. Take your time and weed them out. Throw everything away that you don't need anymore, and shut programs that you don't need right now. Netbooks are not exactly built for multitasking, and unless you have a dual core Intel Atom on board the device will sooner or later run out of steam.
4. When your warranty is over you can replace parts of your notebook. It is only advised for professionals and experienced users to take their computer apart, and it doesn't really cater to everyone, but switching the old HDD for an SSD really spices things up. It may sound like overkill, but the slow HDD often holds performance back.
5. If the budget doesn't allow for a new hard disk drive, you can always run defragmentation software. It puts pieces that belong together near each other so your operating system doesn't spend precious time looking for all the niblets when you open an application.
Netbooks are far from being the roaring beast when it comes to computing power, but it doesn't mean you should have to wait twelve seconds just for the browser to open. If the case is really severe and you can't get anything done, check for the manual if there is a restore partition on the computer. Some models come with a safety button that erases the main partition and puts the one you had the first time back. Don't forget to save everything you need first, though!
