We have just received our brand new Lenovo IdeaPad U550 laptop today and we would like to share our impressions and test results with you, our readers. First, the laptop surprised us the moment we cut open the box. A stylish and elegant piece of hardware, emanating power and agility, this notebook is one of our favorites when it comes to design and elegance. However, we are aware that most of our readers are not that interested in good looks but in performance and versatility, so we began conducting a series of tests to see how our laptop performed. Although at first glance it doesn't look like a very powerful notebook, the Lenovo IdeaPad U550 manages to exceed our expectations. Here is how it behaved in our extensive tests.
We started by testing Lenovo IdeaPad U550's central processing unit and were happy to find an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor, working at a rather small frequency of 1.3 GHz. However, the processor has an L2 cache of 3 MB and works on a good front side bus (FSB) of 800 MHz. Although powerful and versatile, the central processing unit was somewhat disappointing throughout our tests, so we give it only 8 out of 10 points here. However the notebook managed to exceed our expectations when it came to testing the memory. We were thrilled to find 4 GB of DDR3 RAM (2 sticks of 2 GB each) working a high frequency of 1066 MHz. We are also happy to find out that we can upgrade the Lenovo IdeaPad U550 with another 4 GB of DDR3 memory to reach the maximum cap of 8 GB. We definitely give it 10 out of 10 points for its memory.
Next we tested the graphics processing unit and found a very potent ATI Radeon HD 4330 with 512 MB of dedicated VRAM. This video card was able to output sharp, crisp, and clear graphics to the Lenovo IdeaPad U550's 15.6 WXGA display at a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. We give the display and graphics card just 9 out of 10 points for the low maximum resolution. Next, the large 320 GB hard disk drive was large enough to store all our documents and movies, but its 5400 rotations per minute speed had a negative impact on the laptop, so we gave it only 7 out of 10 points. The HD audio and 1.3 megapixel integrated camera and microphone earned the Lenovo IdeaPad U550 a few extra bonus points.
